Editor's Note to The Readers, When conflict is brought about in our world the continent of Africa has always seemed to be at the top of tyranny, rebellions, and acts of inhumanity. Africa’s conflicts are never ending to the point that the international community is numb to any new problems that arise. In April 2012, a thirty-minute video, Kony 2012, went viral documenting one of the many conflicts in central Africa. The LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) is a rebel group that began in the 1980’s in Northern Uganda and has since spread across four different countries creating thousands of refugees and child soldiers. The rebel group is controlled by Joseph Kony and is the longest standing warlord for any rebel group in Africa. Kony was not completely infamous before this viral video but this film alerted the international community of his army. Despite the many critiques that the non-profit company called Invisible Children Inc. received, their film captured the attention of the world, including myself. While researching I was informed of the history, present and possible future outcomes of the LRA in Africa. I researched the LRA from many different angles. From my research I wrote three papers, each one focusing on a different side of the LRA. My first paper was a report. This paper included background information, an analysis of what the present situation is, what the Kony 2012 film’s purpose was, as well as an analysis of the film. My report was a perfect lead in to my second paper of a satirical letter to the editor about a solution that would “fix” the LRA. I chose to make the topic lighthearted and formulate a solution that realistically would not work, but it made the reader think. My third paper was a Position with Proposal that focused on my stance on the LRA as well as a logical proposal to ending the LRA’s rein. My final project on the LRA was a documentary that I created. It was a combination of all of my papers that also included a personal interview with a man from Uganda. This magazine is here to provide a portfolio of my research, my stance, and my compositional work on the LRA. My hope is to inform readers about the LRA objectively while also providing my proposal to a solution to end the tyranny that this rebel group has brought to central Africa. Finally, it is a composition to allow the reader to fully understand the situation through a personal experience with my documentary. Sincerely, Emma A. Becker |
